Pu’uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park

French German Italian Japanese Spanish

When I was a sixth grader at Ma’ili Elementary School on O’ahu Island of Hawai’i, the entire sixth grade class visited Hawai’i Island for a weekend. This was one of the many historical sites we visited. Today, I learned that Pu’uhonua was built before 1550 CE. After Kamehameha the Great’s death in 1819 CE, Pu’uhonua was no longer a place of refuge. This collection of Pu’uhonua O Honaunau links was inspired by Murray Foote’s photograph post, which I reblogged below.

Visitor Center

Park Hours: 7:00-20:00 daily. Fourth-graders receive free national park access via ‚Every Kid in a Park‘ initiative, which ends 31. August 2016. The Kona Historical Society offers an oral history of Pu’uhonua O Honaunau. The site is located on the Kona Coast of Hawai’i Island. Facilities include: museum, picnic area, ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant restrooms with showers, self-guided tour/trail and a Visitor Center. Area activities include fishing, Freedive Paradise (three-day competition each August), hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, swimming and wildlife viewing. Big Island News reports the park as the place to „Experience Old Hawai’i.“

National Park Service

The National Park Service (NPS), under the U.S. Department of the Interior, manages Pu’uhonua O Honaunau as a sacred site. Thus, restrictions are imposed: NO beach chairs; beach umbrellas; commercial filming; coolers; mats; nudity; pets; picnicking; recreational activities like football tossing, frisbee throwing, etc.; smoking; towels; weddings or wedding photos. NPS also collaborates with other organizations to make the park accessible online. This link shows the thoroughness from an earlier time in the NPS 1990 brochure. This is a 1999 NPS link marks the site’s first online presence. The Hawai’ian National Park Language Correction Act of 2000 changed the 1955 named site from City of Refuge National Historical Park to observe the Hawai’ian spelling. NSP hosts their annual Hawai’ian Cultural Festival during the last weekend of June (50th Anniversary in 2011 and reported by National Parks Traveler), which Hawai’i Magazine wrote about in 2013–contacts and activities for 2015.

Geology and Boundaries

The NPS’s park geology noted Mauna Loa volcano created the land where the park is located. The National Parks Conservation Association states the acreage is 419.8. Hale-o Keawe Archeological Report is a historical review and analysis for archeological significance. WorldCat offers the findings to archaeological excavations, which were completed in 1987. The cost estimate for park expansion led to the Pu’uhonua O Honaunau Addition Act of 2002, which expanded the boundaries of the park. Accuracy Assessment Points were conducted in 2011 to outline the park boundary.

The non-native birds account for 83% of the birds detected on the site, according to Scholar Space. Of this finding, sadly, only two native birds were spotted. The Internet Bird Collection contains two images of the black-crowned night-heron.

News and Support

On Friday 23. January 2015, a weak 3.8M quake shook Hawai’i Island. However, Big Island Video News reported that Pu’uhonua O Honaunau experienced severe wave damage. Inspite the damage, entrance fees, reported June 2015, will not increase even though doing so would increase local jobs–the last fee increase happened in 1997. Here is an opportunity to support the restoration efforts, a collaboration between Hawai’i Forest Institute and NPS.

Visitors‘ Experience

The University of Hawai’i Hilo listed inherent risks while visiting Pu’uhonua. Several blogs document visitors‘ experiences and capture their images: Dream Chaser, Pointurier offers a slideshow of the park. Lava, living inspired in Hawai’i, includes oils in plein air style paintings completed on location. Kona Hiking Club, „to bravely go where we have gone before…,“ is an all-volunteer organization that completed a 4.5 mile (7.24 km) hike of the Ala Kahakai Trail in 2008.
